In this post, I will be talking about all weather-resistant materials that I will use in my project, as well as the resistant interior materials for salt and water.
Coastal buildings face a lot of problems due to direct sunlight, wet air, and saltwater erosion. The most common material in coastal residences is granite, but this is not a low-cost or even a sustainable option, which is why I chose durable timber for the walls and stainless steel for the layers of the ceiling so the design is less harmful to the environment and has good durability over time. From the start of my project, I wanted to work with wood because is less harmful to the environment and reflects a more natural image of the building.
Stainless Steel
There are different types of steel used but I chose Stainless Steel because it can be moulded into the design that is needed for an architectural project, it is very durable and has anti-corrosion properties it also does not require a lot of maintenance.
There are many types of wood used in construction like Teak which was my first option but after reading about the environmental effect due to the high demand for this material I chose the second most resistant material, European oak, which is used in the interior of the building due to its durability and capacity of dealing with water.
The wood that I will be using for the exterior is called Cypress is very durable, strong, light and highly resistant to time, it is used in different areas like fences, decks, small boats and more, its common name is Cypress or Bald cypress, its scientific name is Taxodium Distichum it is both water and rot resistant.
Initially, I intended to use wood and brigs at the bottom of my design But this in terms of cost and durability will not be sufficient for my design so I chose to use only wood for the exterior on walls. If this changes I will explain why I made the change and what material I will be using instead.
